The judge gives him a cruelly long saitence and he goes to a place where every effort is made to strip him of any desire to be a man. He is placed under the cane of tpurds not notori ous for anything but brutal instincts— the rougher— the nearer they are to the m oron grade themselves— the bet ter guards they are supposed to be If fear is to be the largest factor in the scheme of prison management why wouldn't it be better to go back to the old punishments o f the days o f Gen ghis Kahn when a man was dismem bered a joint at a time beginning with the little finger joints.
